Postdoctoral Research Associate in cryoEM of biomolecular complexes
Mentor: RNDr. Daniel Němeček, PhD
A postdoctoral research associate position is open in the cryoEM research group at the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) in Brno, Czech Republic (www.ceitec.eu).
We are looking for highly motivated researchers who are interested in structural and mechanistic
properties of large macromolecular complexes, such as viral capsids and assemblies. The
successful candidate will use methods of cryo-electron microscopy and tomography and 3-D
image reconstruction to determine structural features of viral particles at different states of their
replication cycle and thus asses the mechanisms of virus assembly, maturation and cell infection.
The candidate will also participate on preparation and purification of the samples.
Particularly, we are interested in large nucleocytoplasmic dsDNA viruses that belong to the
largest known viruses and cause significant economic losses in fish industry and threaten
biodiversity of amphibian species. We are also interested in assembly, maturation and cell entry
mechanisms of dsRNA viruses that include human pathogens.
The cryoEM group will be equipped with a unique suite of electron microscopes including FEI
Titan Krios, Tecnai F20 and Versa3D. The group is set in vibrant and stimulating environment
of the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) in Brno, Czech Republic. The
operating language is English and the group is part of the Structural Biology Research Program
that includes several international groups with expertise in protein crystallography, biomolecular
NMR, CD spectroscopy and computational chemistry. Brno is an attractive, lively place to live
and work with many cultural and recreational amenities.
Requirements:
The candidate should hold a PhD in biochemistry or biophysics and have a strong interest
biochemistry, structural biology and/or image processing. Previous experience in electron
microscopy, virus infection and isolation, protein expression and purification or image
processing is a plus. Good communication and interpersonal skills are required.
Employment conditions:
· Expected start: September 2013 (negotiable)
· Duration: 12 months with possible extension
· Salary: Competitive salary depending on experience
Interested candidates are encouraged to send their CV and a short statement of research
background and interests to daniel.nemecek@ceitec.muni.cz
The application should include:
· CV with a detailed description of training and research career
· List of publications (original research papers, reviews, conference contributions)
· Two recommendation letters or other references
